Aron Rottenberg, 43, has severe burns over half his body following an attack several days ago. His family says the attack stems from the fact that he doesn't worship at the Hassidic community's main synagogue. Instead, they say he prays at the Friedwald Center for nursing and rehabilitation.
Grand Rabbi David Twersky said on a website that the incident brought a lot of tears and pain. He also said whoever needs healing, God should send them healing. In addition, the rabbi went on to state "it's against our ways" to hurt any Jews.
Charged in the attack is 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer. He is facing charges of attempted murder, arson and assault. Police are continuing to investigate and say there is no evidence that the grand rabbi is involved in the attack.
The Rottenberg family is now calling for a state and federal investigation into the case.

He said the attack evoked “the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi Germany.”
Sussman’s letter dated this past Thursday to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said intolerance has long infected New Square.
Detective Lt. Mark Emma of the Ramapo police said that “there may be federal crimes involved” and that his department would not rule out assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI.
Anti-Defamation League spokesman Todd Gutnick said the organization would await the results of the Ramapo police investigation before commenting.
The state Attorney General’s Office does not have original jurisdiction and can only get involved if it receives a referral from the Governor’s Office, according to state executive law.
The Rockland District Attorney’s Office would have to make the referral to the governor. District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said his office is working with Ramapo police in their investigation.
Meanwhile, According to the Journal News, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer declined comment, spokesman Matt House said,
But Congressman Eliot Engel issued a statement According to Mid Hudson News, calling for justice in the attack on Rottenberg.
“Justice must be vigorously pursued in this case”, said Engel (D-17), whose district includes New Square. “The alleged assailant has been arrested and charged. Now it is time for us to step back and let justice pursue its course. It is essential that this crime be thoroughly investigated to determine the extent of culpability. I am confident in our system of justice, but I will be monitoring these events very closely, and if at any time I believe it is going off course, I will not hesitate to speak out and call for further action._________________

Described as "jihadis" by those who fear them and "hotheads" by some village leaders, the group numbers up to 40 men and boys between the ages of 15 and 35, current and former members of the community told The Journal News.
Ramapo police Sgt. John Lynch said he's aware of the allegations, but that detectives have no proof the young men operate as a unit or that they receive guidance from village leaders.
More than two dozen people spoke to the paper, most on condition they not be named, saying they feared retribution from group members and village leaders who shun mainstream media.
Shaul Spitzer, who is charged with attempted arson and attempted murder in the attack, showed up alone at Aron Rottenberg's house early May 22, according to police.
But locals say the teen is part of a network that defends Grand Rebbe David Twersky's rules with intimidation and violence, terrorizing anyone who would go against him.
"It's like a mafia," said a former yeshiva classmate of Spitzer's, who asked not to be identified. "They make the rebbe like a king and would kill themselves to save the rebbe. They're very dictating people, and they like the action. They act out just to show they own the community."
Spitzer, a cousin of the village's deputy mayor, followed all the rules of New Square and earned the respect of the Skverer Hasidim's spiritual leader, who took the 18-year-old into his home as a live-in assistant.
The classmate, who asked to be driven outside of New Square for an interview, said Spitzer had been a happy and non-threatening young man, so much so that he didn't take Spitzer seriously when he suggested acting out against Rottenberg.

Rockland County, NY - With some of the hottest days of summer still ahead, New Square, a Hasidic village of the Skverer sect in upstate New York, is a catastrophe waiting to happen, local fire officials say. It is a fear that they have faced each summer for many years. Most of the buildings in the village violate the municipal and state fire codes, they say, posing a serious threat to residents and volunteer firefighters there.
“At least 60% of the structures in New Square have serious code violations,” said Kim Weppler, who retired in April as chief of the fire department responsible for New Square. “It’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed.”
Fire officials say that while New Square began building to code several years ago, potentially deadly problems with previous construction remain unaddressed. State officials have not taken action, some local officials and residents say, because they do not want to lose the village’s bloc vote.
“New Square has a lot of power to deliver votes in elections,” said Joe Meyers, a legislator in Rockland County, where the village of New Square is located. “Officials who otherwise do their jobs fall down when it comes to New Square.”

New Square, NY - A community group has circulated a letter claiming Shaul Spitzer just wanted to make mischief on the early May morning that he’s accused of trying to kill a dissident resident and burn down the man’s house with his family inside.
Spitzer, 18, is charged with trying to kill Aron Rottenberg, 43, who defied Skver Grand Rebbe David Twersky by not praying at the rabbi’s synagogue in the village.
Three board members of the New Square Kehila issued a “special letter for Skver followers and friends.” The Kehila deals with charity and other communal affairs.
The letter-writers state that after gathering the facts, “the most important thing we have learned is that the teenage boy did not intend to harm anyone.”
They argue that the incendiary device went off when Rottenberg went after Spitzer, who is accused of tossing one device on the back porch.
“He never wanted to burn a house with five people inside,” the letter says. “His design was mischief on Lag Be’omer night, not arson.”
The Lag Be’omer holiday involves lighting bonfires to honor the teachings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, who is linked to a Jewish revolt against the Roman Empire. In Israel, the holiday is celebrated as a symbol of the fighting Jewish spirit.
The letter condemns violence, says Rottenberg was unjustly attacked, calls for community peace and says “disagreements in a community have to be solved by adults with reason, not by teenage boys with mischief.”
The letter staunchly defends Twersky and the New Square Hasidic Jewish community against criticism and ridicule.
