RAMAPO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) – A charge of attempted murder has been added against an 18-year-old man who allegedly set a neighbor on fire in what may have been a religious dispute in a Hasidic Jewish village in Rockland County.
Ramapo police Chief Peter Brower said Monday that Shaul Spitzer of New Square was trying to burn down Aron Rottenberg’s house when both men suffered burns and were hospitalized Sunday.
WCBS 880′s Catherine Cioffi With More On The Charges
Rottenberg prayed in a nearby senior center instead of at a big synagogue in New City. Because of that choice, he may have been targeted and is now recovering from severe burns following an arson attack at his home.
“It’s about control. I mean, they want to have control of the place and he didn’t obey by their rules,” Moshe Eblaum, the victim’s son-in-law, told CBS 2′s Lou Young.
Rottenberg apparently endured rocks being throw at his house and shouted threats before the arson attack.
It’s believed Spitzer was carrying rags soaked with flammable liquid and somehow tripped an alarm as he came to the Rottenberg’s back porch.
Spitzer was caught on one of the video cameras and people inside the house came out. A struggle ensued and there was a burst of flames. By the time police got there, Rottenberg was seated on the steps badly burned.
Brower said the 43-year-old Rottenberg had third-degree burns on half his body. Spitzer had burns on his hands and arms. He now faces charges of arson, assault and attempted murder. Police did not know if he had a lawyer.
“We are not going to tolerate this. We will follow this investigation to wherever it may take as far as anyone else that may be involved,” Town Supervisor Chris St. Lawrence said.
The accused arsonist will likely be arraigned at his beside at Cornell Burn Center in Manhattan. When he’s well enough he’ll be brought back to the Rockland County Jail on charges that could get him 25 years in prison.

A Truman Avenue man was severely burned Sunday in an early morning arson attack that police linked to a simmering religious feud in the Hasidic village.
Ramapo police said the victim, Aron Rottenberg, 43, suffered third-degree burns to 50 percent of his body after physically confronting an attacker carrying a rag soaked with flammable liquid behind his Truman Avenue home at 4:12 a.m.
Police later arrested 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer, of nearby Adams Lane, on felony counts of first-degree attempted arson and first-degree assault.
Police said Spitzer had serious burns to his hands and arms. He was hospitalized in Nyack before being taken to Cornell Medical Center.
Rottenberg was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, police said.
Police said the Rottenberg family has previously been the target of violence and protests. The feud stems from the fact that Rottenberg worships at the Friedwald Center, not the community's main synagogue used by David Twersky, the Skver Hasidic grand rabbi and the worldwide community's dynastic leader.
On May 6, more than 100 volunteer firefighters were called out after the vacant upper floor of a Bush Lane house caught fire where another dissident family lived. The cause of another fire on Truman Avenue in September was not determined.
Rottenberg and his family had installed surveillance cameras on the two-story structure because of concerns over previous incidents, police said.
Police said Sunday they had not yet found any connection with past incidents against the family and other dissidents living in the community.
"I know there is a history there and we're aware of problems within the community," Ramapo Police Detective Lt. Mark Emma said. "We have no evidence there is a connection. We're still investigating."
Several residents who had gathered along Truman Avenue on Sunday afternoon declined to speak with a Journal News reporter.
A Ramapo police cruiser was parked in front of the Rottenberg's home. The modest two-story wooden structure that is located only two doors down from the Truman Avenue shul, a multi-story glass and stone building that towers over the neighborhood of drab apartment buildings and construction lots.
Chad Cooperman, whose father owns the New Square Fish Market on Adams Lane, said he had heard nothing about the crime and did not know either the Rottenberg or Spitzer. "About 20 families have those last names," he said.
The attack started after 4 a.m. Rottenberg's son woke up his father after hearing someone out on the porch of the family home, police said.
Four family members were at home at the time and began watching a security camera monitor when they saw a man later identified as Spitzer throw something onto their rear deck, Emma said.
The item turned out to be a rag soaked in flammable liquid intended to light the house on fire, police said. Rottenberg and his son went outside, where the father confronted Spitzer, Emma said.
"Somehow — we're not sure yet — the victim's clothes caught on fire," Emma said. "He has severe burns to his face, arms, and chest."
The Rottenberg's son rolled him on the ground to put out the flames, Emma said. Spitzer is alleged to have fled the scene before being arrested by police at 8:30 a.m.
Rockland Paramedic Services was called to the scene and found a badly burned Rottenberg sitting on the front steps of his home. He was taken to the burn unit at Westchester Medical Center.
Police said Spitzer also had serious burns to his hands and arms. He was hospitalized in Nyack before being taken to Cornel Medical Center.
Other charges against Spitzer are possible, including attempted murder or murder if Rottenberg were to die, police said.
The attack came on the first night of Lag B'Omer, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish celebration involving dancing around bonfires. Fire departments in Hillcrest, Monsey, Tallman and West Haverstraw responded to 17 trash bin and garbage can fires between 8:01 p.m. Saturday and 12:35 p.m. Sunday.
Ramapo police were later assisted by the Rockland Sheriff's Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation fire unit and the Rockland County Computer Crimes Unit.

MYFOXNY.COM - Aron Rottenberg is recovering at Westchester Medical Center with burns on 50 percent of his body. The pain is excruciating, his family says. He was burned when he and his son wrestled with a would-be arsonist who on 4 a.m. Sunday had placed flammable rags on Rottenberg's wooden back porch in New Square and tried to light them, according to police.
Four hours later, cops arrested Shaul Spitzer, 18, who lives nearby. He had burns on his hands. He was charged with arson, attempted murder, and assault.
Rottenberg's wife and daughters were at home sleeping when his son saw on security cameras there was a man in the backyard. They could have died in the fire according to police and the victim's son in law.
Moshe Elbaum, the victim's son-in-law, said Rottenberg's problems began after he started a prayer group in the Friedwald Center instead of the main synagogue of the Skver Hasidim, a block away.
Elbaum said that last year the rabbi of the synagogue, David Twersky, announced no one should pray outside the main synagogue.
That day, Rottenberg's car windows were broken, then his house windows, then 100 people chanted outside his home "Aron Rottenberg, leave the neighborhood," then the attempted firebombing.
Police acknowledged that these incidents occurred but have made no arrests in any of them. They also said they have no known motive for Sunday's attempted firebombing.
Cops said Spitzer, who will be arraigned form his hospital bed, will not speak to them.
Police said the 43-year-old victim, Aron Rottenberg, fought off a village resident armed with an incendiary device.
The suspect, Shaul Spitzer, 18, was charged with attempted arson and first-degree assault. He suffered serious burns to his hands and arms.
Rottenberg was hospitalized with burns to 50 percent of his body, according to the Journal News, which quoted cops as saying he and his family had been targeted for not attending the synagogue presided over by the grand rabbi. They went to a rival synagogue instead.

A religious rift in a Rockland County Hasidic town turned violent Sunday when a man was severely burned.
Cops arrested a man from a rival synagogue, according to The Journal News.
Aron Rottenberg, 43, suffered third-degree burns to more than 50% of his body when Shaul Spitzer attacked him with a rag soaked in flammable fluid, police told the newspaper.
Police arrested Spitzer after the attack at 4 a.m. in New Square and charged him with first-degree attempted arson and first-degree assault.
Spitzer also suffered severe burns to his hands and arms, police told the newspaper.
Members of the Friedwald Center, where Rottenberg and his family worship, have split from the congregation of David Twersky, the Hasidic community's grand rabbi and leader.
(05/23/11) NEW SQUARE - An 18-year-old New Square man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking another man yesterday morning, who suffered third-degree burns to 50 percent of his body.
Police say 43-year-old Aron Rottenberg, a local plumber, was no stranger to local animosity in the tightly knit Hasidic community. Neighbors say that Rottenberg and his family have been targets of religious violence because they don't pray at the community's main synagogue.
According to investigators, Rottenberg was watching the surveillance cameras he installed on his home when he noticed 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer, of New Square, throw a flaming rag onto his back porch.
Rottenberg was able to fight off Spitzer, who was allegedly carrying a rag soaked with flammable liquid during the struggle.
A New Square man who was severely burned early Sunday during an attack on his home had been the victim of growing harassment for more than a year because he did not attend the community's main synagogue.
Aron Rottenberg, 43, who suffered third-degree burns to half his body, visited The Journal News office in November to express concerns about his safety.
Rottenberg had been ostracized by the Skver Hasidic sect that runs New Square because he did not worship at the community's main synagogue, headed by Grand Rebbe David Twersky.
A letter distributed to the community in November by New Square's leadership and rabbinical court warned that not worshipping at the synagogue was a severe violation and that anyone in violation must be stopped from using the community's facilities.
"This all started when Rabbi David Twersky called for a meeting demanding the religious services outside his synagogue must be stopped," wrote Sam Dirnfeld, a New Square resident, in an email.
Rottenberg's son-in-law Moshe Elbaum said the family had faced growing levels of intimidation in recent months, including broken windows in their home. Some protested outside the Rottenberg home in November, calling on them to leave. The family later installed surveillance cameras.
The cameras didn't help on Sunday. Just after 4 a.m., Rottenberg confronted a man carrying a rag soaked with flammable liquid behind his home on Truman Avenue and was severely burned during a confrontation.
Rottenberg is in serious condition at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla but is expected to survive.
Shaul Spitzer, 18, of nearby Adams Lane, was arrested and now faces charges of first-degree arson and second-degree attempted murder, both felonies. Spitzer also suffered serious burns to his hands and arms and is being held at Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan. He has not yet been arraigned.
At a news conference Monday, Police Chief Peter Brower said his detectives had not found evidence linking the attack on Rottenberg's house to the previous protests in the community.

NEW SQUARE — Relatives of a man who was severely burned in an arson attack were shouted down by a resident of this Hasidic enclave Wednesday for going against the will of the community's grand rebbe.
A lawyer for Aron Rottenberg, the 43-year-old plumber who suffered burns on half his body Sunday, held a news conference in front of the Rottenberg home to call for state and federal investigations into the arson attack.
Lawyer Michael Sussman, joined by Rottenberg's son and son-in-law, said that Rottenberg was harassed for months by the Skver Hasidic sect that runs New Square because he would not pray at the main synagogue, as required by Grand Rebbe David Twersky.
"This is nothing other than religious bigotry," Sussman said. "If it doesn't stop, it will get worse."
Early in the news conference, a six-year New Square resident, Shulem Sofer, began screaming that Sussman was lying. He yelled out that Rottenberg broke the community's rules and that it was justifiable to try to burn down Rottenberg's home, but not to injure the man.
"The rabbi never said to do fire to people," Sofer screamed in a high-pitched voice. "It's anti-Semitism. It's anti-New Square."
Sussman countered that people in the United States are free to pray where they want, but Sofer said he followed the grand rebbe's rules.
"I am from Jew land," he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
Rottenberg's son-in-law, Moshed Elbaum, asked Sofer what his father-in-law had done wrong. Sofer replied, "It's the wrong thing to go against the rabbi."
As close to 50 people watched, mostly men in wide-rimmed black hats, Sussman and Rottenberg's relatives retreated onto the lawn of the home, and police used tape to separate them from Sofer.
Shaul Spitzer, 18, who formerly worked in Twersky's home and is the cousin of the village's deputy mayor, has been charged with first-degree attempted arson, second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault in the attack on Rottenberg.
After Wednesday's news conference, the men on the street sharply disagreed about who was at fault, Rottenberg for not following the grand rebbe's rules or Twersky for not speaking out against violence before the attack._________________
