Does The Eidah Support The Violence Or Not?
A friend of mine wrote to them about that issue, proving to AMI that the EIDAH really did support the rally. He made the correspondence available to me, after AMI agreed that it could be shared on the Internet.
As suggested in my post yesterday, and clear from the correspondence below, there is a clear difference between what they are saying to the general press, specifically in English, and what they are encouraging and saying in their own neighborhood.
(for ease of clarity as to who is writing what, I will use alternating colors for the text of the correspondence)
----
Reb Yitzchok,
I just picked up a copy of this weeks Ami and was shocked to see the cover article, with the title: "The Eidah and Toldos Aharon Speak Out: 'We Are Under Siege by Extremists", implying that the Edah Hachareidis has nothing to do with supporting violence.
Your one page article -- followed by a three-page article by Nesanel Gantz written largely in the same vein -- claims that demonstration last Motzei Shabbos was "boycotted by the Badatz and the Eidah, and no recognized Torah leader took part in them." Your sources are "Edah leaders."
This is absolutely false. The demonstration was planned, funded and run by the Eidah Hachareidis. Rabbonim from the Eidah Hachareidis spoke at the rally.
I am attaching three files:
1. The front page and fourth page from the most recent "Haeidah," the official newspaper of the Eidah Hachareidis, containing articles relating to Weissfish.

2. A picture -- which I took -- of a sign put up listing the speakers. Among the speakers are Shimon Yitzchok Shlesinger and Yechezkel Cohen, two official morei horaa from the Eidah Hachareidis.
3. Weissfish's appeal to the Supreme Court. It states clearly that he admitted to doing what he did (at trial he denied the allegations, however, there was irrefutable evidence, including video tapes and frum eyewitnesses; on appeal, he realized that denying incontrovertible evidence was not a good idea).
Read the Eidah Magazine and you will see clearly that, despiteWeissfish's admission in court to his violent activities, the Eidah Chareidis actively supports Weissfish and was directly involved in planning the protest. As I mentioned above, members of the Eidah were present and spoke at the rally.
On page 4 of "Haeidah" you can see unambiguous support for the violent activity surrounding the Space protest.
I demand that you issue a correction in the next issue of Ami, in light of the above documents.
-----
Thanks for your email. There is clearly a split, between the Rabbinic and lay leadership of the Edah which is moderate and between a group of powerful zealots who control their paper and exert influence on young activists. The latter have taken matters into their own hands, and the Bedatz has boycotted their activities. This may result in a formal split similar to the one between the Edah and Neturei Karta, or the subsequent split in the Neturei Karta itself.
As stated in the article, we spoke to some of the most important and respected leaders of the Edah establishment.

Let ne respond to your points one by one.
The split is not between the "Rabbinic and lay leadership" and "a group of powerful zealots".
Rabbi J. T. Weiss himself supports the violence and the zealots. Rabbi Weiss personally met with Weissfish the night before he went to jail and essentially the whole way through.
Furthermore, the speakers at the yellow-star, pro-Weissfish protest rally included Rabbinic figures of the Edah: Shimon Yitzchok Schlesinger, Yechezkel Cohen, and others. There are photographs of the protest with the Rabbis who attended.
I am a good friend of Aryeh Fredman. He is a charedi attorney who lives in Ashdod. His brother is the owner of Space. I have received updates about the Weissfish case throughout its journey through the courts.
Additionally, I am close to a large number of askanim in the world of the Eidah Hachareidis.
I can tell you that the root of the problem is the Rabbinical support for the violence.
At the very least, I would expect that the Rabbi's affiliated with the Eidah Hacharedis would have some say over the content of a newspaper that officially bears their stamp of approval.
Let me make things clearer -- I demand a retraction in the next issue. The retraction should state that the official organ of the Edah Hachareidis does support violence.
If such a retraction is not issued, I will not hesitate to bring this issue to the attention of the various Jewish media outlets. This will obviously not reflect well on your magazine.

Not sure what your point is.
That the Bedatz is or isn’t backing the extremists. That the Bedatz did or didn’t participate in the protests. That there is or isn’t a split. That all notes and paskvilim are the official position of the Edah establishment.
That we did or didn’t speak with leaders of the establishment.
Please clarify.

My point is very simple. You must make the following corrections:
1. The protest was officially sponsored by the Eidah Hachareidis.
2. Rabbonim of the Eidah Hachareidis were in attendance and spoke at the rally.
3. While not all notes or pashkevillen are sponsored by the Eidah, you must mention that the official newspaper of the Eidah Hachareidis called for people to protest and supported convicted extremists.

Jerusalem - Rabbi Dov Lipman, who has been campaigning against ultra-Orthodox extremism in Beit Shemesh, has threatened to sue Beit Shemesh Mayor Moshe Abutbol for libel following a recent interview with the mayor published in the weekly Ami Magazine on January 4.
Lipman, who heads the Committee to Sace Beit Shemesh, has taken particular issue with how Abutbol described him as having “fought against every building that went up to house haredim, night and day.” Abutbol also said in the interview that he “condemn[s] Dov Lipman and his cohorts who have been a thorn in the side of Bet Shemesh for years.”
In a letter sent on Monday to the mayor, Lipman’s lawyers, Azulay, Afik ,Ettinger & Co., state that legal proceedings will be taken against him unless he issues a retraction of his statements in the interview with Ami and pays NIS 127,000 in damages to Lipman.

white-house-draped-in-nazi-flags

New York - The editor of Ami Magazine acknowledged today that the front page of this week’s issue depicting the White House draped in Nazi flags with Nazi storm troopers marching in front “may have been a poor choice.”
“The swastika is the present day symbol of Nazism and we did it to make a journalistic statement about the spread of neo-Nazism,” explained Rabbi Yitzchak Frankfurter, the magazine’s publisher and editor-in-chief. “The White House was used as a symbol of the U.S. and not to suggest anything about the present administration or its occupants.”
The magazine, which is not affiliated with any organization, is published each Wednesday in New York and Israel. It is aimed at the cross spectrum of Orthodox Jews ranging from the modern Orthodox to the heredi or fervently Orthodox.
Although this week’s cover generated some complaints “I would not call it a storm,” Rabbi Frankfurter said.

Rabbi Avi Sharfran, director of public affairs for Agudath Israel of America and a regular contributor to the magazine, said in an email that he was “appalled” by the cover.
“The intent, of course, was not in any way referring to [President Barack] Obama but to a nightmare future scenario of American neo-Nazis taking over,” he wrote. “Still and all, the image itself was offensive. I told the editors so, and they agree it was a bad judgment.”
Rabbi Frankfurter said this was a particularly “sensitive” time to have run the illustration so soon after the recent street demonstration in Jerusalem by 1,500 fervently Orthodox Jews, some of whom wore yellow Stars of David on their jackets with the word “Jude” in the center. And some children in the protest wore striped black-and-white uniforms associated with Nazi concentration camps. One child raised his hands in surrender, mimicking the iconic photo of a Jewish boy in the Warsaw ghetto. They were protesting what they said was a nationwide campaign against their belief in the strict separation of the sexes.
Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Israel, called the use of Nazi imagery during the protest “disgraceful.”
“Because of the uproar in Israel over the use of the Jewish star, we may have made a poor choice and we regret putting that in this week’s issue,” Rabbi Frankfurter said.
He pointed out that his magazine “condemned” the Nazi imagery used in the street protest in “very strong” terms.
“We unequivocally condemned the abuse of the Holocaust memories. Now people may make the equation that we are doing the same thing. But if you look at any neo-Nazi Website, you will see that the swastika is their symbol – it is still being used and people are associating it with neo-Nazism.”
Asked if the magazine is going to say anything in next week’s issue about the cover illustration, Rabbi Frankfurter replied: “We may apologize. We don’t want people to think this was an abuse of the Holocaust memory. If anyone would think that, we want to correct that mistake and apologize to people who were offended.”
Rabbi Shafran said he does not see “any comparison between using concentration camp garb to accuse parts of Israel society of anti-heredi animus (real as that animus, unfortunately, is) and seeking to illustrate an article about the growth of actual neo-Nazis in America with the photo at issue.”
In the article, author John Loftus wrote that anti-Semitism has been increasing in the U.S. for the last 30 years and “by leaps and bounds around the world.” He said he has detected an “all too-common tendency of government and social organizations to sweep anti-Semitic or terrorist incidents under the rug. The FBI has been frequently accused in the press of deliberately mislabeling attempted terrorist attacks to improve their statistics. My friends inside the Bureau blushingly admit that the accusation has merit.”
“There is a similar inclination in law enforcement to label attacks on Jews and their property as ordinary criminal mischief rather than anti-Semitic incidents,” Loftus wrote. “Spray painting a swastika on a synagogue is only vandalism. You have to carve a swastika onto a Jewish face before the police will concede that the knife attack may possibly have had an anti-Semitic component.”
Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, told The Jewish Week that that the problem of anti-Semitism is “serious enough not to have to exaggerate.” He said that although it has increased worldwide, it has declined in the U.S. over the last 30 to 40 years.
“That is not to say that America is immune from anti-Semitism, but certainly the White House or America is not overrun by Nazis and neo-Nazis,” Foxman added. “There may be an increase in anti-Semitism, but comparing America to Germany – it will never reach that situation. Both the drawing and article are an exaggeration.”

Being that recently some began to sell in our town the "Ami" magazine which spreads rotten views (hashkafot) of Haskalah and Zionism, and particularly, recently they went a step forward to defame the erlikhe (pious) Jews in Israel who endure bitter persecution and arrests from the Zionists hitters and police, and instead of writing about the inhuman persecution of religion in our Holy Land they chose to legitimize all the cruelty by over blowing alleged "extreme acts" committed by the oppressed ehrlikhe (-pious) Jews - which only came as a result of a long chain of persecuting religion - as if these acts are retroactively the cause of the vast hate of religion by the Zionists,
In the same time that outspoken Zionist leaders and parties are written up there with the nicest colors as if they, with extremism have no connection...
People (Rabosai)! We can't remain quiet when this hazardous magazine is playing with the blood of ehrlikhe (pious) Jews who fight the fight of God in Israel. Demand from your grocer to take out this magazine and make it clear to him that you wouldn't want to buy in a store that is hurting you feelings and helps defame your ehrlikhe (pious) hashkafot (views) with loathly incitement.
Such magazines were never sold among us and we're asking not to break the boundaries that our forefathers erected.

They have more than 29 Groceries in Williamsburg
This is only a list of those that DON'T carry the Ami Magazine. I would imagine some still do. That's gotta be the highest per-capita rate of groceries per square mile in the world. But it's nice to see that Yiddishe פרנסה will continue, and that G-d does not forsake his people, even in the computer age. Printers still need to stay open, so that they can print these bans. So they still need to go to work.
Otherwise וואלט מען משוגע געווארען פאר ליידיג גיין.
