NEWS FROM FT. DIX AFTER THE HOLIDAYS
Knowing that during MarCheshvan, Chesh refers to still talking about the excitement from the holidays, and so we are still in the momentum of the holidays. And as a result of the momentum from the inspiration of the holidays, we are coming together to keep all Jews here united to become better Jews and more united, and to be able to develop better ways to exercise our religious life. So a general meeting was called by the Rabbi. We invited the entire community that they should be together. At the beginning of the month, there was announced that there would be a meeting on Tues. November 8th (11 MarCheshvan) - the yahrtzeiten of Mame Ruchel and the Meor Einayim. Up until the date, there was talk in the community of being optimistic and preparing for the meeting.
There was a special note posted in the Chapel about the meeting. There was a schedule posted which stated that Yossi was first going to begin with a speech, and that his speech would be based on the reason and goal of the meeting. The reason for the meeting is to be re-united and to fulfill our mission; and in the merit of this, we can gain that the administration will allow and help us to fulfill our obligations as observant Yidden. Then Rabbi Samet was to give a speech about the things that we would be requesting - that the Chapel should be open more often, and that we should get better meals, commissary, visits, Torah lessons with credit (like others get for secular classes for good behavior, etc.) and many more things. As we believe that if we are united, sincerely and honestly, we can achieve all our goals, as this will give siyatta d'Shmaya and strength to fulfill all of the Torah as we are obligated to do. And then after the 2 speeches, we were to have a question/answer session.
So on Tues. November 8th, at 6:30pm, the entire community was gathered, and the chairman of the meeting was Eric Levine - a lawyer who has struggled to become shomer Torah u'mitzvos. So at 6:30pm, we gathered together, and the goal was announced that we are to fulfill our mission of Torah u'mitzvos. And although each member of the kehilla here is at a different level and from different backgrounds, we still can be united in our mission to fulfill our mission as Yidden. And even in this kehilla, in certain aspects it is better than other kehillos. As Rabbi Samet mentioned, when we take the arba minim from the lulav and esrog, we take them all together and unite them - the same we we should do with this kehilla. Because we're from different backgrounds and levels of observance, the merit and strength of a kehilla like this - the greatness in unimaginable. Even more so when taking into consideration the difficult surroundings of our environment.
At 6:40pm, Yosef Shereshevsky was called to give his speech. By the way, since he came here, he's been very active in helping the entire community with strength and spiritually, and with much encouragement. He also helps the Rabbi greatly. And he has a great part in the development of re-uniting the entire community, which is the goal of the meeting - to bring the unity of the community to a higher level.
In summary, Yossi started with a welcome to everyone. He explained that as Yidden, we accept the Torah - both oral and written, which has been passed down from generation to generation. And the only way to succeed as Yidden, is to listen and accept what the Rabbis say, even when we don't understand or agree. He also said that, if only the entire Jewish Community of Ft. Dix would keep 2 Shabbosim according to halacha, it would certainly bring the Redemption (Geulah Shleima). And everyone keeping kosher and being on Common Fare. And if no Yid were to speak evil or hear evil of another Yid - this unity would be extraordinary and show the administration and all those around us how serious we are. It would be a great kiddush Hashem. And there would be nothing to stand in the way of us receiving everything we need and more.
If you're interested in receiving the full speech which Yossi gave, you're free to reply to this and ask for the full speech.
At about 7:15pm, the chairman called up the Rabbi to speak. The Rabbi thanked everyone for being there, and expressed that our goal is to be united, and that the Torah is our Constitution and guidebook to each and every thing, day by day, in every subject. And only the Torah is the final say in every thing, everywhere, under all circumstances. And, in fact, the Torah teaches and gives advice in all areas of what a Yid needs all the time, in every place which he finds himself. And the Rabbi said that being united in honesty, this gives the true tools to succeed in our mission.
As it became late and we were supposed to finish, we postponed the rest of the meeting for the following Tuesday Nov. 15th, at 6:30pm. It was also announced that the following Tuesday, there would be special gifts in honor of the shidduch of the Rabbi's youngest daughter, Chumy. And everyone wished Rabbi Samet mazel tov on the engagement.
During the week, the Rabbi worked to seek to achieve the above things, and to make a plan to announce the things in his second speech.
In the next installment, will include the second speech and developments and results which have occured. The two new kollelim will be opened. One kollel will be called Kollel Maran m'Rottenberg, sponsored by the organization "Dror" - which Rabbi Labin is the introducer of this kollel. The second kollel is sponsored by L'Asurim, and all details will be published in the near future.
