Chaim Veshalom Yosifu Loch: Maran Rav Elyashiv Turns 101 Today
Today, Rosh Chodesh Nissan, the posek hador, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv shlit”a, is marking a milestone: his 101st birthday. Last night, by close family and talmidim gathered at his shul, located near his his home, which is at Rechov Chanan 10 in Meah Shearim, to daven for a refuah sheliemah for the posek hador, who has been feeling unwell recently.
Rav Elyashiv hasn’t given his world famous daily shiur, delivered in the bais medrash adjacent to his home, in a couple of week due to his recent weakness.
One year ago, to mark his 100th birthday, Rav Elyashiv visited the newly reconstructed and rededicated Churvah Shul in the Old City of Yerushalayim.
During recent years, Rav Elyashiv has been zoche to celebrate the birth of a great-great-great-grandchild, a great-great-grandson born to Rav Elyashiv’s son-in-law and daughter, Rav Chaim and Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky.
Born on Rosh Chodesh Nissan Tof Reish Ayin, April 10, 1910, Rav Elyashiv is a grandson of Rav Shlomo Elyashiv zt”l, the Leshem, who was niftar in 1925 and hailed from Šiauliai, Lithuania. His father was Rav Avraham of Homel and his mother was Rebbetzin Chaya Moussa, daughter of the Leshem. His wife, who passed away in June, 1994, was a daughter of Rav Aryeh Levin zt”l, the “Tzaddik of Yerushalayim.”
Rav Elyashiv and his Rebbetzin had eleven children. His daughters’ husbands include Rav Chaim Kanievsky; Rav Yosef Yisroel Yisraelzon zt”l; Rav Elchonon Berlin, rov of the Achva shul; Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein, rov of Ramat Elchanan (whose wife was nifteres and who has since remarried; Rav Ezriel Auerbach; and Rav Binyomin Rimer, a rosh yeshiva at the Tshebiner Yeshiva and at Yeshiva Kiryas Melech in Bnei Brak.
One of Rav Elyashiv’s daughters was killed in 1948 by Jordanian shelling.
When Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman was once asked if there is anyone in our generation who understands Kabbolah, Rav Steinman thought for a while, and then nodded his head and answered affirmatively. He was then asked who it is, and after a moment’s silence, Rav Steinman answered, “Rav Elyashiv.”
The halachic rulings and insights of Rav Elyashiv have been published in several seforim. The multi-volume Kovetz Teshuvos contains teshuvos from questions asked of him over many years. Many of his drashos and chiddushim, most dating from the 1950s, were collected and published as Divrei Aggadah. Another work that includes his p’sakim is titled “Yashiv Moshe.” These works were not written by Rav Elyashiv himself, but were compiled by his relatives and talmidim.
May Hakadosh Boruch Hu give Rav Elyashiv kochos and gezunt to continue leading Klal Yisroel for many, many more years, amidst good health.

Yomim Al Yimei Melech Tosif: Marking Maran Rav Elyashiv Shlita’s 101st Birthday

This evening, as Rosh Chodesh Nissan begins, Maran Hagon Rav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita, is marking his 101st birthday.
A large group of his Talmidim, those close to him, and family members, gathered at his Bais Medrash to Daven for the Refuah Shelaima of the Posek Hador, who has not left his home in the past two weeks to deliver his Shiurim, due to severe pain in his legs.
Until two weeks ago, Rav Elyashiv kept to his busy schedule, delivering his Shiurim, and seeing dozens of people seeking advice, Brachos, and Halachic questions
Rav Elyashiv was Zoche seeing the birth of a sixth generation close to two years ago, a great grandchild to Rav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita, a son to his great grandchild, R’ Yonatan Hoenigsberg.
May he be Zoche to greet Moshiach in our days!

Rabbi Elyashiv’s Condition Deteriorating

The condition of 101-year-old Torah Sage Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv is deteriorating as doctors at Jerusalem’s Shaarei Tzedek Hospital struggle to save his life. His 102nd birthday is to be in two months.
The leader of the Lithuania hareidi religious community, who is one of Israel's greatest Torahs scholars, has been hospitalized for a week after suffering shortness of breath. Hiscondition previously had worsened but stabilized until Sunday.
It worsened again after he underwent procedures Sunday morning for the removal of mechanical breathing devices. He began breathing on his own with the help of oxygen then suffered a serious setback.
The rabbi’s spokesman, Shlomo Kook told Arutz Sheva Sunday that the procedure failed and his condition now is critical.
Doctors discovered the past two days that problems with Rabbi Elyashiv’s heart have been complicated by what appears to be pneumonia that has contributed to the worsening of his condition and which hampered attempts to allow to breathe independently.
Readers are asked to pray for the health of HaRav Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musa.

Update on Rav Elyashiv Shlita
(Sunday, February 19th, 2012)Maran Posek HaDor HaGaon HaRav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita remains in serious condition in a cardiac intensive care unit in Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center.
The rav has been taken out of the medically induced coma and is responding to external stimulus. The coming days doctors explain are extremely significant towards evaluating the rav’s condition and his ability to return to his state prior to the admission to the hospital some two weeks ago.
The tzibur is requested to continue davening for Rav Yosef Sholom ben Chaya Musha b’soch kol cholei am yisrael.

According to doctors at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, the situation surrounding the condition of Maran Posek HaDor HaGaon HaRav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita is nothing short of a “medical miracle”. They are now talking about a timetable surrounding the rav’s possible return home.
Yehuda Schlesinger of Yisrael HaYom reports the rav has returned to speaking with those around him and all assisted breathing adjuncts have been removed. One must remember that the posek hador, who is almost 102, davened korbanos on erev Shabbos by heart, not to himself but audible, for others to hear, to the astonishment of all those around him. He is very weak, but speaking with those around him and the rav is questioning what is planned for a Purim seuda.
The doctors report “no one expected the rav to return home but now, this appears to be a realistic possibility”.
The rav was in cardiac arrest, revived, and has undergone a number of life-saving procedures. Doctors are simply astounded, including the frum members of the medical team who understand the power of tefilla and the unique stature of the patient as a gadol b’torah.
The tzibur is urged to continue davening for R’ Yosef Sholom ben Chaya Musha b’soch kol cholei am yisrael.
