KJ factions in 'eternal feud,' judge says
November 12, 2009 2:00 AM
On Monday, Supreme Court Justice Joseph Owen became the latest judge to reach an almost operatic level of exasperation with the warring, hyperlitigious factions of Satmar Hasidim.
Asked to intervene once again in a fight over a dissident synagogue in the Village of Kiryas Joel, Owen — who first ruled in the case almost two years ago — fumed that both sides "appear to be under the erroneous belief that this long-disposed proceeding will continue as indefinitely as their eternal feud with one another."
"It is seemingly impossible to ever resolve their 'legal' issues," the judge wrote. "Rather, they engage in an endless cycle of seeking judicial intervention and then ignoring court mandates, invoking whichever authority is viewed as paramount at the time."
In a nutshell: Owen refused to make Kiryas Joel's main congregation restore water and electrical service to the dissident synagogue, and repeated that the dissidents must stop using the former apartment for worship until getting belated approval from the village
As of Wednesday, the dissidents continued to pray in their synagogue.
They said they planned to appeal Owen's order.
