Brooklyn Couple Killed in Attacks

Published: November 28, 2008

Leaders of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Brooklyn and the worldwide ultra-orthodox Jewish community began on Friday to mourn the deaths of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka, who were killed in the terrorist attack of the Nariman House, the Jewish outreach center in Mumbai that the young couple had left New York to manage in 2003.

Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, who leads the group's missionaries, condemned ''the brutal murder of our finest.... Words are inadequate to express our outrage and deep pain at this tragic act of cold-blooded murder.''

The couple's son Moshe, who turns 2 on Saturday, was rescued from the attack by the family's nanny. ''Today he became an orphan, without a dad and mom to love him and embrace him and celebrate him,'' Rabbi Krinsky said.

Ms. Holtzberg's parents, Rabbi Shimon and Yehudit Rosenberg, flew from Israel to Mumbai, arriving early Friday with members of a private search and rescue organization, ZAKA, and now have custody of the child, Rabbi Krinsky said.

Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky broke down when describing Mr. Holtzberg, 29, as ''the finest and nicest gentleman that you can imagine. You never saw him without a smile.''

He was ''a real mensch,'' Mr. Kotlarsky said. ''We'll miss him very dearly. He was a very special person, him and his wife.''

In 2003, Rabbi and Ms. Holtzberg, both Israeli-born but living in Brooklyn, left New York to run the Chabad center known as the Nariman House, where they managed a synagogue and led religious classes and other social and outreach activities at the center, one of about 3,500 outposts around the world run by the Lubavitch Hasidic movement. Rabbi Holtzberg is a citizen of both the United States and Israel.

''Gabi and Rivky Holtzberg made the ultimate sacrifice,'' Mr. Kotlarsky said in a statement before the news conference. ''Their selfless love will live on with all the people they touched. We will continue the work they started.''

Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel's Channel 1 television that five bodies were recovered inside the house following the commando raid.

''They found five bodies — two women and three men,'' Mr. Barak said, according to Reuters. ''Some of the bodies were tied up. To judge by the accompanying signs, some of the people were killed a good number of hours previously.''

Mr. Barak said that the house ''was completely ruined from within, mainly from the explosions set off by the Indians.''

On Wednesday, the Holtzbergs' Chabad house became an unlikely target of the terrorist gunmen who unleashed a series of bloody coordinated attacks at locations in and around Mumbai's commercial center.

Firing grenades and automatic weapons, the men took the Holtzbergs and at least six other people hostage, according to friends of the Holtzbergs. The cook, who was also a nanny, managed to escape with Moshe about 12 hours into the siege, the friends said. The boy's pants were soaked in blood when he emerged.

Rabbi Kotlarsky said that Rabbi Holtzberg had called the Israeli Embassy from inside Nariman House and was describing the situation when the line went dead. His last words before being cut off were ''Lo tov,'' Rabbi Kotlarsky added, which means ''not good'' in Hebrew.

It is not known if the Jewish center was strategically chosen, or if it was an accidental hostage scene. In a news conference broadcast Friday on Israeli radio, Tzipi Livni, Israel's foreign minister said: ''We know that the targets there that were sought out by the terrorists were Jewish and Israeli targets as well as targets that are perceived as Western targets — American and British.''

She added: ''We need to understand that there's a world here, our world, that has been attacked. And it doesn't matter if it's happened in India or somewhere else. We have here radical Islamic elements who do not accept either our existence or the values of the Western world. And only when incidents of this sort occur is it suddenly understood from conversations with leaders from around the entire world that we are actually party to the same battle.''

In New York, officials condemned the attacks. ''This is indeed a very sad day,'' Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said, speaking at the news conference in Crown Heights. ''It is a reminder to all of us just how connected we are.''

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz expressed their condolences.

''This is a tragic loss for the Lubavitch community, and for our entire city,'' Mayor Bloomberg said. ''That their son survived is a miracle, and our entire city is grateful for his nanny's heroic act. During a time of terrible sadness, her courage reaffirms our faith in the capacity of good to triumph over evil.''

Said Mr. Markowitz: ''The Holtzbergs could have lived a simple and quiet life in Crown Heights, where Rabbi Holtzberg grew up, but their sense of religious duty took them to India to run Mumbai's Chabad House, which, under their stewardship, became a comforting home away from home for thousands of Jews. We are inspired by their commitment to others. The prayers of Brooklynites, New Yorkers and the global community are with the Holtzberg's family, loved ones, and especially with their 2-year-old son, Moshe, in this tragic time.''

If the Jewish center in Mumbai lacked the size and prominence of the attackers' other targets, the news of its fate reverberated among Chabad houses in Australia, Argentina, Tunisia, Kazakhstan, Norway and 67 other countries.

Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg were born in Israel, though he and his siblings were brought to Crown Heights as children by their parents. The couple married a year before they went to Mumbai, formerly Bombay, to fulfill a role that Rabbi Dovid Zaklikowski, a high school friend of Rabbi Holtzberg, said fit perfectly with his personality.

Rabbi Krinsky said that the Chabad-Lubavitch movement received an outpouring of sympathy. ''It is a tribute to the selfless life the young couple led,'' the rabbi said. ''In their memory, let us channel this unity into our own homes, their short, but productive life.''

Jewish hostage had ties to Hudson Valley

KIRYAS JOEL– One of the Jewish hostages held at the Chabad Center by terrorists in Mumbai, India had ties to the Hudson Valley.

The brother of Grand Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum's son-in-law is reported to have been among those killed by the terrorists, although no formal confirmation has been made. Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum is the spritual leader of the Satmar sect, which includes the Village of Kiryas Joel.

Rabbi Leibish Teitenbaum from Israel was in the Chabad Center. His brother, Rabbi Baruch Teitelbaum, lives in Kiryas Joel and is the son-in-law of the grand rabbi.

Five hostages are reported to have been killed in the Chabad House including the young rabbi and his wife, who ran the center.

Rabbi Pesach Burston, leader of Orange County Chabad, said the attack in India was not just against those Jews who were killed, but against world Jewry. ''The only way we can combat this terrible darkness of people fighting us is by increasing light,'' he said. ''You can't get rid of darkness in any other way than increasing the light.''

'Bentzion was slumped over a Talmud'

Bentzion Chroman, who survived an earthquake in China earlier this year, was killed when a terrorist invaded the Mumbai Chabad House where he had stopped briefly on Wednesday for the afternoon minhah prayer. A Zaka rescue and recovery organization spokesman told The Jerusalem Post that Chroman was found in the library slumped over an open Talmud.

    Benzion Chroman.

On Saturday night, hours after hearing of Chroman's death, his relative Binyamin Fogel told the Post that the presence in that building of his beloved friend was entirely accidental.

Chroman, 28, had gone to India at the request of his friend, Rabbi Leibish Teitelbaum, to help supervise kashrut. Teitelbaum was also killed in the attack.

"Bentzion was not supposed to be there. But [Teitelbaum] asked him to go as a personal favor," Fogel said.

They had been scheduled to head out earlier this month, but the short trip was delayed to last week as a result of visa problems. The pair were scheduled leave India on Thursday so they could be back in Israel for Shabbat.

On Wednesday, Teitelbaum called his wife to say they were going to the Chabad House to pray.

At the family's Bat Yam home, Chroman's wife initially did not even know that her husband was in the Chabad House. At home with three children - aged five, two and eight months - she began to worry when she could not reach him. News of the attack only made her more anxious.

Her fears and that of her family were confirmed when contact was made with Teitelbaum's relatives and they learned that the two men had been in the building at the time of the attack.

"There was so much misinformation," said Fogel. Initially they were hopeful that maybe the men had left before the attack and were hiding somewhere, unable to call.

But the reports they head from Israeli officials and people on the ground in India continued to paint a bleak picture. Someone checked at the men's hotel and confirmed that they had not been there since Wednesday.

By Friday, it was clear that they were probably at the Chabad House. Right before Shabbat the family spoke with an official from Foreign Ministry who said that nothing was known yet, so the family entered Shabbat without any word on Bentzion's fate.

They prayed for the best over Shabbat, even as some of the visitors to the Bat Yam home told them that the death had been reported on the news.

Official word, however, did not come until Saturday night, said Fogel.

"During Shabbat we lived with the hope that we would have good news," he said. But as night descended on Saturday and they parted from the Sabbath, their worst fears were confirmed.

During the ordeal, Chroman's parents had been on a trip to the United States with one of his brothers to attend a wedding in New York. Although Chroman was born in Israel, according to Fogel, his father is from Chicago. He believed they heard the terrible news before the start of Shabbat there and were now trying to get on a flight back to Israel.

"I still do not believe that he won't return," said Fogel, who last spoke with Chroman on November 20.

He recalled how proud Chroman was of his oldest son, who was just learning to read and study in school. "Bentzion was a very special person. He was so happy."

Satmar family: No State involvement in son's funeral

Hasid killed in Mumbai attacks recognized as terror victim by Israel, but his family begs government not to send representatives to funeral, cover his coffin with national flag, saying he belonged to anti-Zionist haredi stream

The State has decided to recognize the Israelis murdered in the Mumbai terror attacks as victims of terrorism and pay for their funerals, but not all are happy with this decision. The family of slain Hasid Aryeh Leib Teitelbaum has informed the government that it would like the State not to intervene with his funeral.

According to a family member, "Holding a Zionist funeral for Teitelbaum, who was a Satmar Hasid, would desecrate the dead man's honor." The family demanded not to have a government representative at the funeral and that the casket, which will be flown into Israel today, would not be covered with the Israeli flag.

They also asked that Teitelbaum's body would be released immediately upon the plane's arrival, so that they would be able to hold an intimate funeral for him as soon as possible.

Shmuel Pfenheim of the Haredi Community anti-Zionist stream told Ynet: "I'm sending a message from the family. We don't want the State to meddle in our grief. Suddenly Israel has an interest to show the world that it is also a victim of global jihad, so it decides to throw a big ceremony with a coffin wrapped in a flag. We object to this. It pains us and offends our values."

'Not an envoy of the State'

Pfenheim, who attended the same yeshiva as Teitelbaum, added: "He wasn't killed as an envoy of the State or as a Zionist person. He simply went there as a kashrut supervisor on behalf of an American kashrut system. He himself was an American citizen, and although he was a resident in Israel he wasn't an Israeli national.

"The mere fact that he was living here, in a closed congregation, doesn't give the country permission to exploit his death."

Despite their protest, sources in the Haredi Community stressed that they did not plan to create havoc over the matter. "We are not like Neturei Karta. We conduct our struggles peacefully, and are simply begging the minister in charge and the police – the man has suffered enough. He's been there for almost a week. Let us bury him according to the family's will."

Orphan of slain rabbi in Mumbai heads to Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) An Israeli Air Force jet left India for Israel Monday carrying the 2-year-old orphan of a rabbi and his wife who were slain in the Mumbai Jewish center attack, along with his parents' remains and the Indian woman who rescued him.
Moshe Holtzberg's slain parents, Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, 29, and Rivka, 28, ran the headquarters of the ultra-Orthodox Chabad Lubavitch movement in Mumbai.
Six civilians were killed in the center in the three-day terror siege that ended Saturday morning, Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Andy David said. In all, more than 170 died in attacks on 10 targets across the Indian city.
Moshe was spirited out of the center on Thursday by Sandra Samuel, a nanny who worked there for years. She found him crying beside his parents' bodies, his pants drenched in blood.
An Israeli Air Force jet left Mumbai on Monday, carrying Moshe, Samuel and the remains of his parents and the others killed at the Chabad House, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.
Government officials planned a small ceremony upon the plane's arrival at Israel's international airport late Monday, with funerals scheduled Tuesday.
All six of the civilian victims in the Chabad House were Jewish, and four were Israelis, the Foreign Ministry said.
Moshe was accompanied on the trip to Israel by his maternal grandparents, Yehudit and Shimon Rosenberg, who were reunited with their grandson when they arrived in Mumbai on Friday.
''It was pure raw emotion, tears of joy, tears of sorrow, incredible emotion, understandably out of control,'' said Robert Katz, a New York-based fund-raiser for an Israeli orphanage founded by the boy's family.
Asked about Moshe's condition, he said: ''I don't know that he can comprehend or that he will remember seeing his parents shot in cold blood.''
Before Moshe was taken to Israel, dozens gathered at a synagogue in Mumbai for a memorial service for the Jews slain at the Chabad center. During the service, Moshe burst into tears and appeared to be calling for his mother.
Moshe's father was a dual American-Israeli citizen and his mother was Israeli. The couple lived in Israel and Brooklyn before they moved to Mumbai in 2003.
The toddler has one older sibling who has Tay-Sachs, a genetic disorder particularly prevalent in Jews of Eastern European origin. He is permanently hospitalized in Israel, Katz said. The couple's first-born child died of Tay-Sachs.
Samuel, an Indian resident, will live with Moshe in Israel ''so at least he has someone he knows and recognizes and loves,'' said Katz.
During the siege of the Jewish center, Samuel had locked herself in a laundry room when she heard Moshe's mother Rivkah screaming ''Sandra help!'' Then the screaming stopped, and it was quiet, Katz said.
She cracked open the door of her hiding place and saw a deserted staircase. She ran up one flight and saw the rabbi and his wife, covered in blood and shot to death. She snatched the crying boy, bolted down the stairs and out of the building.
''She's been there with him throughout,'' Katz said.
Though Samuel has no passport or papers, Moshe's grand-uncle, Rabbi Yitzchak David Grossman, helped arrange for her to get a visa to Israel. In a sad coincidence, Grossman is founder of the Migdal Ohr, which says it is Israel's largest facility for orphaned and disadvantaged children.
The Foreign Ministry said the government would arrange official funeral send representatives to the ceremonies, as it does for victims of attacks at home.
''There are going to be thousands of people at this funeral,'' said Katz, executive vice president of Migdal Ohr's fundraising arm in New York. ''This couple wasn't living in the West Bank. They weren't settlers. They weren't occupying anyone's land. They were killed because they were Jews, simple and plain.''
