Breaking News

Hillary Admits Barack Is Ahead

Officials say Hillary Clinton will acknowledge tonight that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, it is reported.

But a spokesman for the Clinton camp insisted Sen Clinton was not and would not concede the campaign.

The Associated Press news agency had reported that senior Clinton staff were saying the Clinton campaign was effectively over and some campaign staff were being let go.

"The AP (Associated Press) story is incorrect. Senator Clinton will not concede the nomination this evening," a statement from the Clinton campaign said.

Sky News US political analyst Jon-Christopher Bua said there no was immediate reason for Sen Clinton to quit the White House race.

"Does it mean she is going to walk away? I don't know," he said.

"But we know Obama has more delegates. She can get her tough pitbulls out and contest the nomination process and go to the floor before the Democratic convention.

"There are all kind of legal shenanigans that could go on."

Democrats in South Dakota and Montana are casting their votes tonight in the last primaries of the contest.

Sen Obama is 40 delegates shy of the 2,118 needed to clinch the nomination but he is widely expected to make up the difference tonight with votes and superdelegate support.

Around 170 superdelegates have yet to make up their minds, many are congress men and women whose seats are also up for election in November.

They want to make sure they are backing a winner.

In last hours of the primaries Sen Clinton maintained she would be the stronger nominee against John McCain in November's general election.

AP Reports: Obama Takes Nomination

Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, based on an Associated Press tally of convention delegates, becoming the first black candidate ever to lead his party into a fall campaign for the White House.

The AP tally was based on public commitments from delegates as well as more than a dozen private commitments. It also included a minimum number of delegates Obama was guaranteed even if he lost the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana later in the day.

Clinton was ready to concede that her rival had amassed the delegates needed to triumph, according to officials in her campaign. These officials said the New York senator did not intend to suspend or end her candidacy in a speech Tuesday night in New York. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they had not been authorized to divulge her plans.

Obama claims Democratic victory

Mr Obama spoke to cheering supporters in St Paul

Barack Obama has declared himself "the Democratic nominee for president of the United States".

He was speaking to a cheering crowd on the last day of the primary season, after receiving the support of enough delegates to clinch the nomination.

Of the states that voted, Montana was won by Mr Obama and South Dakota by his rival Hillary Clinton.

If confirmed, Mr Obama would be the first black candidate to represent a major party in a US presidential poll.

In her own speech to supporters, Mrs Clinton refused to concede and said she would make a final decision later.

BBC North America editor Justin Webb says a fabulously well-planned and executed campaign helped give him the edge over his rival.

Role for Clinton?

The Democratic Party's nominee will officially be declared at the party's national convention in Denver in August.

Mr Obama's speech was delivered in St Paul, Minnesota, where Republicans are set to hold their presidential nominating convention

DELEGATE COUNT
Winner: Needs 2,118 delegates
Super-delegates: Obama, 389; Clinton, 282
Total delegates: Obama, 2,154; Clinton, 1,919
South Dakota and Montana (early results): Obama, 15; Clinton, 13

In the address, he paid tribute to Mrs Clinton and hinted that she would play a role in any future Obama administration.

"What gets Hillary Clinton up in the morning is an unyielding desire to improve the lives of ordinary Americans," he said.

"When we finally win the battle for universal healthcare in this country, she will be central to that victory."

Mr Obama also praised Republican rival John McCain's "many accomplishments", although he accused the Arizona senator of choosing to deny his own achievements.

Speaking in New York, Mrs Clinton congratulated Mr Obama and his supporters "for all that they have accomplished".

But she said she was making "no decisions tonight" about her continued presence in the race.

She later spoke to Mr Obama by phone, and he repeated an offer to "sit down when it makes sense to you".

Mr Obama's campaign said she responded positively, though no meeting was expected on Wednesday.

Mr Obama will be tempted to offer Mrs Clinton some inducement to play ball, but may also be tempted to be rid of her and her husband and to * out on his own, Justin Webb reports.

Primaries over

Earlier, she told congressional backers that she was "open" to the idea of being Mr Obama's vice-presidential running-mate.

Hillary Clinton: 'I will be making no decisions tonight'

Mr Obama was only a few delegates short of the 2,118 needed ahead of the polls closing in South Dakota and Montana.

And although he failed to win in South Dakota, he had managed to pick up enough endorsements during the day from the remaining uncommitted "super-delegates" - party officials with a free choice over who to support - to pass the winning post as soon as polls closed in the state.

They are not obliged to make up their minds until the convention in August.

But Democratic Party's leaders have urged them to choose their preferred candidate by Friday in an effort to unify the party and focus on the general election.

The statement by senior Democrats, including party chairman Howard Dean, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, avoided endorsing either candidate.

"Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election," they said in Wednesday's statement.

"To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super-delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country."

Campaign starts

Mr Obama's projected victory in Montana added even more delegates to his tally.

In South Dakota, Mrs Clinton won with 55% of the vote to Mr Obama's 45%.

In Montana, with 96% of the results in, Mr Obama had garnered 56% of the vote against Mrs Clinton's 41%.

Before the voting was complete, Republican presumptive nominee John McCain delivered a speech to supporters in Louisiana, in which he declared that "the primary season is over, and the general election campaign has begun".

He attacked Mr Obama for being "the wrong change", and defended himself against the Obama campaign's criticism that he will continue President Bush's policies, saying he had "not seen eye to eye" with the president on many issues.
