MONSEY - Ramapo police arrested two men on felony charges of burglarizing a Maple Terrace synagogue early this morning and suspect they may have broke into a second shul.
Yitzchok Nahon, 17, of 20 Ellish Parkway and Mendel Weiss, 26, of 7 Nesher Court both were charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of possession of burglar tools.
They were caught at B'nais Sisocher at 12 Maple Terrace, off Maple Avenue, police said.
Police were called by someone who was monitoring B'nais Sisocher's surveillance cameras and saw the break-in, Detective Lt. Brad Weidel said.
Both men were accused of entering the synagogue through an open front door, cutting off the lock to the poor box and taking an unknown amount of cash, Weidel said.
He said the men then allegedly broke into the storage closet and took juice and cookies.
Weidel said detectives were investigating whether a synagogue next door to B'nais Sisoscher also was burglarized.
Nahon was released on $1,500 bail, while Weiss is being held in the county jail in lieu of $5,000 bail
