Brooklyn, NY - Attempted Rape of Williamsburg Hitchhiker

Brooklyn, NY - Community leaders have approached VIN News with an urgent request to post the following chilling story as a vital warning to our fellow Yidden. Yesterday at 11 AM, a young Williamsburg woman accepted a ride to Boro Park from an apparently heimish man, dressed in Chasidic garb – hat, tzites, beard, and Yiddish-speaking. Several minutes into the ride, he stopped the car, pulled out a knife, and attempted to rape his vulnerable passenger. Thankfully, the victim didn't lose her senses, and was brave enough to struggle against her attacker. She escaped from the car in time, and 911 emergency personnel arrived at the scene moments after.

While we at VIN take great care to respect the privacy of individuals, we report this personal, harrowing episode as a burning lesson to all. Under no circumstances, in any situation, should one accept a hitch from a stranger! In today's dangerous world, we cannot jeopardize our safety simply because we need to get from Point A to Point B. Unfortunately, we can't trust an individual because of his appearance; looks are deceiving. Please protect yourself and your family, and do not place yourselves in the risk and grave danger of hitchhiking.

HASIDIC 'HITCHHIKE' HORROR IN B'KLYN

uly 6, 2007 -- A knife-wielding man attacked a pregnant woman who had accepted a ride from him in Brooklyn, cops said yesterday.

The 21-year-old woman - who, like her attacker, is Hasidic - had been waiting at a bus stop on Kent Avenue at Wallabout Street in Williamsburg when the man pulled up in a gray minivan at 11 a.m. Tuesday and offered to take her to Borough Park.

She hopped in the back seat; hitchhiking is fairly common among Hasids in the two neighborhoods.

The driver was in his 20s, of medium build, and dressed in typical Hasidic clothes, hat and beard, and spoke fluent Yiddish, sources said.

As they were driving, he told her he was from out of town and had to get a GPS navigator in the back.

Cops said he pulled over at Adams and York streets, pulled out a knife and tried to attack the woman.

She fought him off, but was slashed on her right hand before she escaped, and the man drove off.

Isaac Abraham, a Hasidic community leader , said it's an "everyday thing" for Hasids to give rides to one another, and that the corner is a spot where people often wait for a lift.

"We are very concerned. It's hard to believe that this guy figured, 'Let me pick 11 o'clock in midday and try * one,' " said Abraham.

"There may be other victims that were too afraid to fight."

(Williamsburgh - WABC, July 6, 2007) - There is fear Friday in a community that many often believe is immune to crime. A pregnant Hasidic woman was attacked by a stranger offering her a ride.

The suspect is also a stranger police believe was also Hasidic. The incident happened in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

Eyewitness News reporter Phil Lipof has details.

There are Hasidic communities in close proximity to each other, one is Williamsburg and another in Borough Park. People in the Hasidic communities travel back and forth on a daily basis. And to do that, they often catch rides with Hasidic strangers. It's a practice they've been using for nearly four decades without a problem. Until now.

The young mother-to-be did what so many others do on a daily basis in this area, she got into the car of a stranger for a ride over to Borough Park, from one Hasidic community to another.

The man inside was dressed in traditional clothing and spoke fluent Yiddish. She felt safe. That is, until he pulled over and took out a knife.

"He had to take a tremendous chance of knowing that he's going to injure the woman and the child if he was...successful of using that knife," community activist Isaac Abraham said.

But the 21-year old, in her third trimester, fought the knife-wielding man off. She wound up getting her wrist cut. Abraham says she needed surgery and some stitches.

"I'm sure now they're going to be more hesitant to get into a car unless it's a woman driver," neighbor Izzy King said. "Even if he's speaking Yiddish and dressed Hasidic to the T."

King stopped to give a few men a ride Friday, at the same spot where the woman was picked up.

"It put everybody in a complete state of shock, that women were scrambling to find out what happened, who it is, how they can help," King said.

"I know sometimes for the world it's difficult to understand how this goes on, but they can view it," Abraham said, of the practice. "It's been going on for 35 years and nothing, zero."

Until now.

Abraham and others in the community say this kind of sinister attack is simply not tolerated, and everyone hopes police find the man soon.

"But if there would have been street justice, and he was apprehended by this community, I think this knife would have been used for another circumcision," Abraham said. "And the community would have decided to what extent."

That's the kind of anger eminating from this tight-knit community. Police only have a vague deion to go on. The suspect is a man in his 20s, dressed in traditional Hasidic clothing with a medium build.

Attack On Pregnant Woman Outrages Hasidic Jews

Williamsburg Women On Alert Following Tuesday's Slashing

(CBS) BROOKLYN There was concern Friday over a twisted attack on a pregnant woman in Williamsburg.

Hasidic community spokesman Isaac Abraham says it happened late Tuesday morning on the edge of Williamsburg in this triangle park, where Hasidim routinely catch rides to a sister community in Borough Park.

"The anger and frustration in the community is so deep," Hasidic spokesman Isaac Abraham said.

A 21-year-old woman, six to seven months pregnant, was approached here by a Hasidic-dressed man in a van who offered her a ride to Borough Park. She got in and he drove onto the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

"Once he got on the expressway, he said he's from out of town, not familiar with the location. He has to get off," Abraham said.

He got off at one of the first exits, drove to Adams and York Street near the Manhattan Bridge and said he had to get his GPS navigation device out of the back.

"He got out of the car, went into the back, got a knife and told her either to undress or some other obscene thing," Abraham said.

They struggled. The woman was able to get away, but before she did, she was slashed by the knife.

"He slashed her wrist," Abraham said.

The victim was hospitalized for a wound that is not serious. People who live in Williamsburg are troubled by the presence of an attacker.

"You know, in our community of 40,000, you have maybe one rotten apple, so," one man said.

The van is described as light blue or gray. The man, about 30, medium build, had a beard, and traditional black pants and coat.

"Hasidic dressed, it's like picking out a needle in a haystack in the Hasidic community," Abraham said.

Women in the community are being warned to take precautions to commute back and forth, not alone, but with a friend.

Authorities are hoping that a video camera near the scene may help police identify the attacker's van.
