ALBANY, N.Y.

Gov. George Pataki was transferred to a New York City hospital Tuesday because he was showing no improvement five days after surgeons removed his appendix.
Pataki's intestines aren't functioning and he is being given water and nutrients intravenously, said Dr. Wiji Ratnathicam, a surgeon at Hudson Valley Hospital Center, where the governor had been treated before the transfer.
"He's essentially in the same condition that he has been in for the past few days," said Pataki spokesman David Catalfamo. "It's obviously a situation that needs to be corrected."
Pataki, 60, checked himself into Hudson Valley Medical Center early Thursday complaining of severe abdominal pain. His appendix, which had begun to rupture, was removed during emergency surgery.
The governor was initially to be released Saturday, but he was still showing no improvement Tuesday, so he was transferred to New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan where doctors have access to more resources, Catalfamo said.
Pataki was alert and in good spirits, Catalfamo said. The three-term Republican governor is considering a run president in 2008.
Fellow Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher of Kentucky also remained hospitalized Tuesday after contracting a blood infection while recovering from gallbladder surgery last week. The bacteria in Fletcher's blood was moderately resistant to antibiotics, but treatment seems to be working, doctors said.
In Connecticut, another Republican governor, M. Jodi Rell, was involved in a car accident Tuesday morning but escaped injury. The governor's driver and the teenager whose vehicle hit the car's driver's side were also uninjured, authorities said.

Governor Pataki Undergoes Surgery To Remove Intestinal Blockage February 21, 2006

Governor George Pataki underwent surgery in a Manhattan hospital Tuesday because of a blockage in his intestines, five days after doctors performed an emergency surgery to remove his appendix.

Pataki was transferred from a Westchester hospital to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center this morning because his condition has not improved following the removal of his appendix last Thursday. Doctors say the transfer was made because Pataki did not have a bowel movement after the first surgery.

Surgeons treating Pataki say the governor's digestive system has not been functioning properly since the first operation, and he continues to be fed through intravenous fluids. The decision to perform the second surgery was made Tuesday morning.

According to a spokesperson for the governor, doctors said the surgery on Pataki's intestines went off without complications, and he is not in any danger.

Aides to Pataki say the governor is now, ''awake, alert and resting comfortably'' following the intestinal surgery.

Doctors will update the governor's condition on Wednesday.

It is unknown when Pataki will be able to leave the hospital.
