Hearing set to discuss Eitz Chaim synagogue

The Village of Monroe Planning Board will hold a public hearing at 8 p.m. Wednesday on a proposal by Congregation Eitz Chaim to build a synagogue at Orange Turnpike and Reynolds Road. The hearing is at Village Hall, 7 Stage Road.

The congregation plans to leave its current building at 475 Route 105 for a location more conducive to walking, so members who live nearby can refrain from driving on the Sabbath, in strict accordance with Jewish law.

Last year, the group paid $500,000 for the 5-acre parcel on Orange Turnpike and contracted to sell its existing synagogue, rabbi's house and 4.1 acres for $1.8 million.

Leaders estimate the proceeds of the property sale could pay for construction of a 15,000-square-foot building, according to court papers filed in connection with the sale.
