Five Democrats line up for Kelly's job
All five Democratic candidates who are seeking the opportunity to challenge Republican Congresswoman Sue Kelly for the 19th Congressional District seat in New York met in a forum in Beacon Saturday and they sounded very much alike.
Judy Aydelotte, John Hall, Jim Martorano, Darren Rigger and Ben Shuldiner all agreed on one thing – Kelly must go. Each candidate characterized her as a conservative lawmaker who supports the Administration whatever it does. They said her voting record provides the most ammunition in their early bids for the seat.
All five candidates, who agreed that they would support the winner in a September party primary election, sounded similar themes. They said the US should not have attacked Iraq and now that it is there, it should develop a plan to get out; that the Indian Point nuclear power plants should be shut down and replaced with another form of energy; that there is a need for national healthcare coverage; and that the nation's education system needs to be improved.
Jonathan Jacobson, Orange County's Democratic Party chairman, said he would expect ''a winnowing down'' process that results in one candidate before petitions are circulated this summer. He said he would rather not see the race reach a party primary election in September.
The over 2 ½ hour session was sponsored by Peter Adler and the Dutchess County Democratic Club.

Debating Dems united against Kelly

Beacon - They want to replace Rep. Sue Kelly, but yesterday they sounded ready to take on the whole Bush administration.
Five Democrats are challenging Kelly, a six-term incumbent Republican, in the 19th congressional district. They gathered yesterday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 666 in Beacon for what was billed as a debate but functioned more as a forum for them to state their views and answer a few questions from an audience of more than 100.
The candidates, in alphabetical order, are:
- Judy Aydelott of Katonah (Kelly's hometown), a lawyer specializing in medical malpractice.
- John Hall of Dover Plains, a musician and anti-nuclear activist; also a former Ulster County legislator and Saugerties school board member.
- Jim Martorano, a lawyer with the Bronx Legal Aid Society and a councilman in Yorktown.
- Darren Rigger of Peekskill, a diplomacy and international security consultant and political fundraiser.
- Ben Shuldiner of Crompond, principal of the High School for Public Service, which he founded three years ago.
They agreed on many issues.
They said the Iraq war was a mistake and that they want our military home as soon as practical. They want Social Security saved, not privatized. They want the Indian Point nuclear plant closed.
But the candidates occasionally made an effort to stand out from the pack.
Shuldiner asked at one point: "Who better to fight in Congress for education than a principal of a high school?"
Hall pointed out he's held a higher level of elective office - county legislator - than the other four and has national name recognition.
Kelly also faces a possible challenge within her own party: Jeff Cook of Monroe, a former national field director for the Log Cabin Republicans, is exploring a run against her.
