Orange County Legislature Democrats continue deliberations on chairman
Despite the Republicans holding a one vote majority in the incoming 2006 Orange County Legislature, the Democrats may wind up wielding the true control.
Two Republicans are vying for the chairmanship – Spencer McLaughlin and Frank Fornario, Jr. Since a majority vote is needed, the Democrats will cast the deciding votes.
The Democrat Caucus met again last night and Minority Leader Anthony Marino said afterwards that nothing definitive has been worked out.
''At the present time, we're still supporting our Democratic candidate, Roxanne Donnery, but the two Republican candidates are both speaking to us,'' he said. Both have met with the Democrats and will be screened again over the telephone.
Republican county legislator Michael Amo appeared before the Democrats last night, lobbying for their support for Fornario, who he said would form a coalition government.
The full legislature will vote on a chair at its first meeting next week. If they cannot come to a majority consensus by February 1 st, the county executive would select the new chair.
