State Police Troop F 'buckle down' on seat belt law
The State Police Troop F Friday announced that New York's latest zero tolerance seat belt enforcement will begin on Monday November 21, and continue through Sunday, November 27.
Troop F members will set up checkpoints and dedicated patrols along roadways in their territory west of the Hudson River to ensure compliance with New York's seat belt law, said commander Major John Melville. The State Police will be joined by police agencies across the state in the effort, which is part of the ongoing Buckle Up New York Campaign.
''We intend to send a strong message to motorists across New York State,'' said Melville. ''It doesn't matter whether you buckle up to save lives, or to save yourself a ticket, just make sure you buckle up – today and every day.''
The latest Buckle Up New York wave will encompass the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, which traditionally kicks off the winter travel season.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes kill an average of more than 42,000 people in the U.S. each year. Crashes also kill more young people than any other cause. All occupants, regardless of age, should be properly restrained.
Troopers will conduct safety restraint checkpoints during the one-week sweep. During last year's fall wave, Troopers staffed 102 checkpoints statewide and issued 3,285 safety restraint citations over a seven-day period. Law enforcement agencies in New York State initiated the Buckle Up New York Campaign in 1999.
