Trials and Tribulations
Radio show to talk Hasidim on Sabbath
Boy, this could be fun. Orange County Court Judge Stewart Rosenwasser, who's running for state Supreme Court, will be a guest on Chester lawyer Mike Mazzariello's WGNY-AM radio program, "Closing Arguments," at 9 a.m. tomorrow. He'll be appearing just a few weeks after Hasidim from feuding factions in Kiryas Joel and Brooklyn duked it out at a Brooklyn synagogue. That brawl ("hats and bats," in police vernacular) came in the wake of a Rosenwasser order demanding proof that a member of the Kiryas Joel faction had been expelled from the Brooklyn synagogue. It's all wrapped up in a bitter dispute over who will succeed the grand rebbe of the Satmar Hasidim.
Here's the rub: Kiryas Joel's residents are strictly observant Jews. They don't travel, cook or turn on appliances during the Sabbath, which begins at sundown Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. That means listening to Mazz's show and interrogating Rosenwasser on the air will be problematic for the thousands of people in Kiryas Joel who vote. Some surrogates might have to step up.
So, if you live in Kiryas Joel and you've got a question for the judge, you've got until sundown today to get your Shabbos goy (non-Jew who helps out on the Sabbath) lined up with some probing inquiries worthy of Maimonides himself. If you're not from KJ, once again, that time is 9 a.m. tomorrow, 1220 and 1490 AM on your radio dial.
Pass the popcorn, please.
