Developer has plan for vacant 17M lot
A weed-choked lot on Route 17M where a 40-year-old bowling alley burned down eight years ago might finally have a buyer with development plans.
The Village of Monroe Planning Board last month began reviewing plans for a 45,000-square-foot, two-story commercial building that would house a furniture store and other retail uses, offices and a conference room.
The lot is next to a Sunoco station and across Route 17M from Crane Park in downtown Monroe. Since Bowl-o-Rama burned down in 1997, trash and brush have crept across the asphalt and concrete; skateboarders have skittered across it until shooed away; cars with "for sale" signs have sat on it.
The man who plans to develop the property is Zigmond Brach, a Brooklyn businessman involved with the opposition movement in neighboring Kiryas Joel. The sale price is unknown. Three years ago, the owners were asking $1.2 million.
