Monroe
Claim of stolen plates leads to charges

Talk about stepping into it. George Lebron knows a thing or two about that.
Shortly after noon, the 41-year-old New York City man walked into the Monroe state police barracks to report the license plates on his 2003 GMC Yukon had been stolen. Lebron said the plates were taken on or about June 8 at his wife's house in Monroe, said Sgt. Bruce Furbeck.
Troopers ran a check on Lebron's commercial driver's license and the alleged missing plates. State police said they discovered that Lebron had been driving the car without insurance.
Then troopers happened to notice a car in the parking lot matching the deion of Lebron's Yukon. It had the "missing" plates on it – one in front and one in back, Furbeck said. Police said Lebron's driver's license was scheduled to be suspended and, by reporting the plates stolen, he hoped to avoid that.
Lebron was charged with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and driving with a suspended registration, both misdemeanors; and operating a car without insurance, a traffic violation, Furbeck said.
