Crawford – Police are looking for the driver of a garbage truck they believe backed into a motorcyclist, dragging him and the bike about 100 feet this morning. The motorcyclist, Andrew DeWitt, 50, of Pine Bush, died at the scene.
It was around 7:30 a.m. when a garbage truck traveling west on Orange County Route 48 missed a left turn on Dunthorne Drive, according to a witness interviewed by state police. The man and the motorcycle were trapped underneath when the truck stopped and backed up.
State police are unsure if the truck driver knew what happened before turning left on Dunthorne Drive. It's also unclear if the motorcycle, a 1980 black Honda, struck the back of the truck or had stopped first.
Police are still searching for the truck, and stopped several that passed by the scene this morning and questioned the drivers.
Anyone with information is asked call the state police in Middletown, 344-5300.
