A Jewish day of fasting
Today is a solemn day of fasting in Kiryas Joel, where residents are observing the Jewish holiday, Tisha B'Av, which commemorates all tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people throughout history. It is said to be the date on which both the first and second temples in Jerusalem were destroyed during biblical times.
Tisha B'Av concludes a three-week period of mourning that intensifies during the last nine days. It is celebrated by more strictly observant Jews, ranging from the ultra-Orthodox of Kiryas Joel to conservative congregations such as Eitz Chaim, just outside the village in Monroe
