Pirro to challenge Clinton

Westchester District Attorney Jeannine Pirro yesterday said she would seek the Republican nomination to run against Senator Hilary Clinton next year. Clinton is the odds on favorite in the polls, regardless of who her opposition might be.
Pirro will make her announcement official tomorrow.
Reaction came yesterday from Ulster County Democratic Party Chairman John Parete, who told MidHudsonNews.com that it was about time that she made up her mind.
He said the Republicans will do whatever they can to "bloody" Clinton in her re-election bid in an effort to keep her out of the White House in the future. ''They are mortified that she will succeed in her re-election as senator and will run for president of the United States and they want to bloody her up to try to prevent it.''
Dutchess County Republican Party Chairwoman Elizabeth Brilliant is "excited" about Pirro's candidacy. ''She will do an outstanding job for the people of the State of New York in the US Senate just as she has for the people of Westchester in her position as DA," Brilliant said.
Assemblyman Ryan Karben of Rockland County said the race between Clinton and Pirro, "will give political junkies the fix they crave. But I can't see why New Yorkers would trade The West Wing for Court TV. Senator Clinton has a proven record of standing up New Yorkers on every front – from homeland security to air quality to education. New Yorkers will reward that record with enthusiastic support in 2006.''
Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno called Pirro "a rising star of the Republican Party."
