Several articles appeared in newspapers the past week that should disturb your readers:
The first had to do with the city of New London, Conn. using eminent domain to seize 17 homes so a hotel and convention center could be built. A tragedy for sure, but an even greater one when you realize the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the city's right to do this.
The second story had to do with Joseph Bruno blocking legislation that would have allowed a single casino to be built in Sullivan County. Seems Joe wants three casinos, one of which pays his son $10,000 a month in consulting fees. This seems like a conflict of interest wide enough to drive a Hummer through.
The final story was the defeat of the library proposition in Monroe. I wasn't unhappy to see this defeated, as I felt it a little too ambitious and expensive for the town. What bothered me was the realization that a single bloc vote in Kiryas Joel can just about block anything the town wants to do. And, scarier yet, the bloc vote can be used to elect politicians who share the same aspirations as Kiryas Joel.
Our personal freedom, as the song says, seems to be slip-sliding away.
