Monroe Republicans get a rude awakening
Year in and year out, Republicans on the Monroe Town Board could always count on the Conservative Party endorsement at election time. It might not have won them any races, but it burnished their reputation as penny pinchers and gave them a second ballot line to collect more votes.
This year, the party's over.
The Conservatives have snubbed Don Weeks, Sandy Leonard and Peter Martin, each of whom has had the party's ballot line for at least four consecutive elections. Instead, their support went to the incumbents' mortal enemies in the activist group Save Monroe.
Save Monroe, a thorn in the side of the all-Republican board, has put up Bob Purdy to challenge Leonard for supervisor and Theresa Budich and Kathy Parrella to go after the council seats held by Weeks and Martin. Budich, a Monroe-Woodbury school board member, recently replaced Ward Brower III on the ticket after Brower pulled out.
Orange County election records indicate Leonard has had the Conservative line in every election since she first ran in 1991. Same goes for Martin, first elected in 1989. Weeks, a councilman since 1978, has had Conservative backing since at least 1985.
So what happened this year?
One factor was Kiryas Joel. Hank Sosa, a Woodbury resident who served on the Conservative committee that picked Save Monroe, said of those candidates: "They want a stable government that gives everybody equal rights, that doesn't favor one group over another." Translation: The Republicans pander to Kiryas Joel and ignore their critics.
Another was the desire for fresh faces – a rather unconservative motive.
"The Monroe Town Board has done a fine job," he said. "But it's time for a change. It's time to get some of those people out of there."
