Village might connect a powerful, new well
Kiryas Joel could drown its chronic water woes with a new well said to be more than twice as productive as any of its 15 existing wells.
The village has applied to the state Department of Environmental Conservation for a permit to operate a well in Monroe capable of producing 450 gallons per minute. By contrast, the most powerful wells in Kiryas Joel's arsenal can pump no more than 220 gallons per minute, Village Administrator Gedalye Szegedin said.
The 45-foot-deep well taps a sand-and-gravel aquifer next to the Ramapo River on property Kiryas Joel owns in Monroe, near six wells that are already part of the village water system. Water is piped from that property under Route 17 to Kiryas Joel.
The state DEC is soliciting written comments on the proposal through June 3. The agency will determine how many hours a day Kiryas Joel could pump the well if and when it issues a permit. If approved, the well could be on line within two months, Szegedin said.
