hurt in Jerusalem riot
Seven injured in clashes between Jerusalem police, ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students in capital's Meah Shearim quarter; Orthodox charge police brutality
By Ilan Marciano and Efrat Weiss
JERUSALEM – Seven police officers were wounded and eight ultra-Orthodox men arrested during clashes in Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox Meah Shearim quarter Tuesday night.
The yeshiva students threw bricks, rocks, and even benches at police as they attempted to arrest a protester outside the Satmar Yeshiva, near the Shabbat Square intersection.
Some Orthodox rabbis have denounced the building of the Trans-Israel Highway because they say the road passes over ancient Jewish graves, and have called on followers to protest the ongoing road works.
Protesters blocked traffic
Several hundred protesters returning home from a demonstration outside the Transportation Ministry burned garbage and blocked traffic at Shabbat Square.
Police were called, and several suspects were arrested.
But as officers tried to arrest a man outside the Satmar Yeshiva, hundreds of students inside the building began attacking officers in an attempt to free the student from police custody.
Seven officers were injured during the riot. One officer was moderately injured and evacuated to Bikur Cholim Hospital. Four others were lightly wounded and received first aid on the spot.
Officers entered yeshiva
Ultra-Orthodox eyewitnesses claim the officers then entered the yeshiva.
''All of a sudden, there were cops everywhere, beating people. They came into the Satmar synagogue, and broke benches and tables. Anyone who spoke was beaten,'' one eyewitness said.
Police claim the officers only entered the yeshiva building in order to save a comrade being beaten by students inside.
Jerusalem police categorically rejected charges that officers damaged yeshiva benches and holy books, saying the ultra-Orthodox were only trying to slander the officers.

Haredim scuffle with J'lem police in grave protest
By ETGAR LEFKOVITS
Several hundred haredi demonstrators blocked a central Jerusalem thoroughfare Tuesday evening in the city's Mea Shearim neighborhood and then clashed with police in protest over what they believe is the desecration of ancient graves during the construction of a national highway, police said.
Police dispersed the protesters, arrested five
demonstrators, and reopened the street to traffic.
While police were arresting one of the haredim
suspected of setting a garbage bin on fire, several hundred haredim inside a nearby anti-Zionist Satmar Yeshiva began pelting police with stones, pieces of metal, blocks, and hurled benches at them in an effort to torpedo the arrest, injuring five police officers, including one moderately, police said.
Three suspected rioters were arrested on the scene, while the moderately injured police officer was evacuated to the city's nearby Bikur Holim Hospital.
Israeli archaeologists say that the graves in
question near 'Road Six' are not being disturbed
during the work on the highway.

By ETGAR LEFKOVITS AND JPOST STAFF
Several hundred haredi demonstrators blocked a central Jerusalem thoroughfare Tuesday evening in the city's Mea Shearim neighborhood and then clashed with police in protest over what they believe is the desecration of ancient graves during the construction of the trans-Israel highway, also known as highway 6, police said.
Police dispersed the protesters, arrested five demonstrators, and reopened the street to traffic.
While police were arresting one of the haredim suspected of setting a garbage bin on fire, several hundred haredim inside a nearby anti-Zionist Satmar Yeshiva began pelting police with stones, pieces of metal, blocks, and hurled benches at them in an effort to torpedo the arrest, injuring seven police officers, including one moderately, police said.
Three suspected rioters were arrested on the scene, while the moderately injured police officer was evacuated to the city's nearby Bikur Holim Hospital.
Israeli archaeologists say that the graves in question near the highway are not being disturbed
during the work on the highway.
The caretaker of the yeshiva and synagogue, Moshe Rott, told Israel Radio that dozens of police officers entered the yeshiva, shattered windows and hit several students.
In response, police officials said that the officers had only gone as far as the entrance to the facility in order to pull out a policeman who was being dragged into the yeshiva.
On Wednesday morning, MK Meir Porush condemned the police's handling of the incident. "The police records all demonstrations. I would be interested in seeing that footage...It is disturbing to watch the police beating people," he told Israel Radio, "How can they enter a synagogue? What Hutzpah that is!"
Asst.-Cmdr. Menny Yitzhaki, commander of the Zion regional station in Jerusalem, denied any wrongdoing by the police during the incident. He told Israel Radio Wednesday morning that the police did only what they needed to do to contain the violent situation. He also stressed that the police only entered the yeshiva to retrieve the officer who was being dragged into the building.

6 arrested in clashes with ultra-Orthodox in Jerusalem
By Jonathan Lis and Roni Singer
Six people were arrested last night as hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem threw stones and other objects at police during a protest against construction work on the Trans-Israel Highway.
Protesters fear damage could be caused to graves during the construction of a northern part of Highway 6.
Three police officers were injured during the clashes.
On Tuesday night, five officers were wounded in clashes. One of them was in moderate condition, and the rest sustained light injuries. Nine of the rioters were arrested.
Some of the protesters said they had caught police brutality toward them on tape.
Protesters demonstrated Tuesday in front of the Transportation Ministry's offices in Jerusalem, and later moved to the Mea She'arim neighborhood, where they burned trash cans and blocked traffic to a city square and nearby streets. Police arrested five of the rioters and reopened the roads.
But later, when the police tried to arrest a man suspected of setting fire to trash cans near a Satmar yeshiva, hundreds of ultra-Orthodox rioters began to throw rocks, bricks, metal rods and benches at the officers, in efforts to free the suspect. Three more suspects were arrested during the incident.
Similar protests against the extension of Route 6, the private toll road that runs north south through the center of the country, have been breaking out almost weekly in the same neighborhood in Jerusalem for some months. The controversial section is planned to run near Kibbutz Regavim, north of Hadera, which, according to ultra-Orthodox groups, contains dozens of burial caves, identified as those of Jews from second temple period.
On Monday night, 15 ultra-Orthodox protesters were arrested for rioting and causing damage to the home the highway's chief engineer in Ganei Tikva, south of Petah Tikva. Around 20 people attended the protest.
Around a week ago, leaflets were found stuck to the engineer's door, threatening to hurt him should the road be constructed along the planned route. Similar messages were also taped to cars on his street.

ZAKA Questions Police Behavior in Satmar Yeshiva Clash
16:20 May 04, '05 / 25 Nisan 5765
(IsraelNN.com) The ZAKA search-and-rescue first-response organization sent a letter to Jerusalem police chief Ilan Franco demanding an explanation as to why, according to ZAKA, paramedics and ambulances of the organization were kept away from the scene of a violent confrontation between civilians and police in a Satmar yeshiva in the capital last month.
According to reports of ZAKA volunteers on the Haredi website ladaat.net, the police prevented the first-response teams from approaching the yeshiva, claiming there were no injured people there. However, the ZAKA volunteers reported hearing calls for medical assistance, and later, wounded Chassidim were brought out on makeshift gurneys to the ZAKA ambulance parked at a distance.
On April 27th, following road-blocking protests against construction of Highway 6, which opponents claim is causing a desecration of ancient graves, police assigned to arrest some Satmar Chassidim who threw blocks and metal objects burst through a Satmar yeshiva in order to extricate a policeman who was trapped in the building. Eyewitnesses and film from the yeshiva showed police overturning tables in the synagogue and kicking and beating several people even after the policeman had been extracted.
