"Those People"
A number of weeks ago we announced that we were entering into discussions with leaders of the Kiryas Joel Alliance, sometimes referred to as "the Dissidents." Since then, on more than one occasion, we have been asked "How can you trust those People?"
When we ask who "those people" are, we are told: "KJ."
KJ, Kiryas Joel, is merely a municipality. It's population is over 13,000. Among them are some people who have no regard for the truth, for fairness or for their neighbors.
There are also people like Mendel Schwimmer and Pinkus Jakobowitz, of the Kiryas Joel Alliance, who have spent years denouncing and fighting the decisions made by the leadership of the Village and taking out newspaper ads advocating for neighborly solutions.
The KJA says Administrator Szegedin's and Mayor Weider's policies and behavior toward their neighbors are resented, not only by the members of the KJA (which makes up about half of the village's population) but also by the vast majority of the entire population of KJ.
We have many arguments with the leaders of KJ. But we have to keep in mind that they do not speak for everyone, and that, by having discussions with the KJA, we have a chance for real progress.
We do not agree with the KJA on everything. Currently they are pursuing the annexation of 87 acre parcel of land, in Woodbury, near Seven Springs Mountain Rd. and adjacent to the Village of Kiryas Joel. This is an action we must firmly oppose.
We feel that by having these discussions we might just be heard on this issue and we might discover real partners for building an honest and mutually beneficial relationship. No matter what happens, we will be neighbors. For everyone's sake, it is worth the effort to try to become good neighbors.
Yes, if we try, we may fail. But, if we do not try, we are certain to fail.
