Officials discuss merging services

Town and village officials Thursday night broached the notion of consolidating emergency services in this growing town and offering local police service in areas outside Monroe's three villages.
The Harriman and Monroe village boards and members of the Monroe Town Board assembled at the John DeAngelis Meeting Room to discuss the concept informally, batting around a range of possibilities for sharing police, fire and ambulance services.
The only detailed proposal was one that Monroe Village Trustee Thomas Remo sketched out as one option: adding more cops to the village police force and having the department cover the unincorporated town areas too. He proposed phasing in the new cost for town taxpayers over three years.
Town and village officials last considered forming a townwide police force seven years ago, but dropped the idea because of the cost for people in the unincorporated parts of Monroe, which are covered by a state police barracks in town. The villages of Monroe and Harriman have police departments, and the Village of Kiryas Joel has a public safety department.
