א דאנק פאר "גאסט" פאר'ן ברענגען די נייעס:

It's called the marketplace

By David Diness

I found your screaming front page headline and four-page article on property purchases and sales in the Kiryas Joel area inappropriate, sensation-seeking, divisive and really of no great significance or importance.
Why do I say this? Very simple. Back in 1967 we bought an old farmhouse on the Winterton Road between Spruce Road and Bloomingburg. Within 4.5 miles we had five working farms. Now we are down to one. I don't remember any front-page noise about that event in the Record.
One of the farms in the early '70s was turned into two housing estates. Between both, I'd guess there are now 80 houses. And around the corner on Spruce there is another housing development. I'd guess there are at least 50 houses there, too. Again no screaming headlines, and no four-page articles about that "assault" on the quiet neighborhood, and the bucolic community being destroyed.
Buying and selling, change in community, life and death, success and failure, that is what America is about. If someone feels a change in their neighborhood is no longer to their liking, they put a "for sale" sign up on the lawn or along the field that no longer has grazing cows.
And guess what? In today's market the house they bought 25 years ago for $25,000 can now be sold for $250,000. And some other very ordinary house in a more desirable neighborhood will fetch the median price that you wrote about a couple of weeks ago. They can take the money and run. Or they can say to the buyer, "I'm not willing to sell this time," or they can say: "I'd be willing to sell for $750,000." Who knows, maybe the buyer will accept the counter offer.
So tell me, what was the motive in writing that article? I think it was with a view of turning neighbor against neighbor. Then you'd send a reporter to Monroe to write another sensational article about murder and mayhem and use wherever possible your favorite words, "outrage and anger."
Shame on you.

David Diness lives in Winterton.
