Williamsburg Waterfront Park
Sports: Archery
Beach Volleyball
NOTE: The city has proposed a zoning change for the area; should it be enacted, NYC2012 will make appropriate modifications to the site.
The new Williamsburg Waterfront Park will set Olympic archery and beach volleyball against the dramatic skyline of Manhattan. Easily reachable by subway and ferry, this world-class venue will turn over 25 acres of vacant industrial land in Brooklyn into a new park with a stunning waterfront promenade. Archery will take place on a spacious field facing north with a second, smaller field providing training and warm-up space. Beach volleyball will be held on two new competition courts with spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River.
Legacy
Williamsburg, which has very little public open space, will gain a new waterfront park where residents can play basketball, handball and soccer. Green space will also be provided for picnic areas, open lawns, and children's playgrounds, making Williamsburg Waterfront Park a key component of a revitalized East River waterfront. The Olympic warm-up field will be able to house archery events long after the Games conclude. The rebuilt piers will offer space for fishing, strolling, and recreational beach volleyball, all with spectacular waterfront vistas.
Reclaiming a Brownfield for Public Recreation
Formerly home to the Eastern District Rail Terminal, the site proposed for Williamsburg Waterfront Park suffers from substantial industrial contamination. Much as bio-remediation efforts helped create Sydney's Olympic Park at Homebush Bay, subterranean oil contaminants at this waterfront site would be treated with injections of air and nutrients into the soil, allowing bacteria to consume the petroleum residue. Surface deposits of coal ash would be removed, and the entire site would be capped with clean soil to allow safe and productive recreational use.
